I work in a department of 10 women, my boss has always favored a girl named Becca. Becca decided she needed to move 5 hours away to help with her family, so we hired another girl to take Becca's place.

The new employee was given Becca's old position, cubicle, phone number, etc.

4 months later Becca decided she wanted to come back, so my boss created a new position just for her, gave her a pay increase to help with her family problems, and gave her back her old cubicle.

The new girl was asked to move from the cubicle and was given a small desk to use in the hallway until "we could move to a new building." She stayed at the small desk for 9 months before we moved buildings.

The women (including me) in the department felt this was wrong, but they didn't say anything to our boss.

What do you think?

well, he/she is the boss. the boss can do anything as long as nobody is being hurt physically.

That is very wrong. Your boss sounds like he has a thing for Becca. He should have let the new girl keep her cubicle and given the desk in the hall to Becca when she came back. There shouldn't have been a new position made just for her and an increase in pay rate just for family problems because we all have them. I think there might be something going o between them two and she is milking it for all she can get. I would talk to the new girl and tell her how you feel and let her know it is not her or he work ethics, just your boss is an @sshole. This is letting everyone in the department know that no matter what Becca does, Becca is going to get her way. Sooner or later it is going to affect all the rest of you girls. If you want to confront your boss, take a few other girls with you and explain to him that you guys feel he mistreated the new girl. But you know what... it's not going to do a damn thing when it comes to Becca. He will ignore you all and even may cause you heartache and eventually make you leave the job. OK, I guess, bite your tongue when it comes to the boss, but tell the new girl it has nothing to do with her personally. That is just the way his is with Becca.

On the basis of that information, it certainly looks as if the new girl got a raw deal; you don't say whether Becca's new job had extra responsibilities that could have accounted for her pay rise and the accomodation upgrade. It also sound as if the building was overcrowded (given that you have to move within months).

You don't say anything to imply that there was anything improper in the boss's relations with Becca and it's possible that she had some especially valuable knowledge or skills that the boss wanted to have back. Also, you don't say anything one way or another to indicate whether Becca's move for a few months had been agreed with the boss. (By the way, I'm female, so not automatically taking the man's side or the boss's side).

What I *would* say is that it's the job of a good manager to so what I call 'manage your messages' - and by that I mean they they should remember that the people working for them are likely to have them under close scrutiny and to imagine, guess, or sometimes fantasise about their motives. I think that you boss didn't do this very well and he almost certainly should have been much clearer about what he was doing and why. On the basis of what you say, I think that this is the only firm conclusion one can draw - and I'd ask you and the rest of the women why you haven't raised the issue with your boss in a polite but firm fashion instead of continuing to harbour feelings like those you write about.

Better accomodations could have been made, but since Becca is his favorite (for whatever reason) and evidently he told her that she could always come back. If the new employee didn't say anything then so be it. She now has a new desk, everyone has a job.

I say he should have put Becca in the hallway.

♥ For starters, your boss shouldn't pick favorites. That's wrong, too. And yes, I agree with you-- it was wrong. Becca *chose* to leave, but the new girl gets punished for Becca's decision? I'm guessing that you don't plan on telling your boss that was wrong, but it is. Good luck~ ♥

Sounds very wrong to me! That kind of thing happens all the time where I work and there are only 6 women here but the boss always lets one girl miss work and leave early all the time and still pays her for 40 hours!

so wrong. how humilitating for the girl that was forced to sit in the hall for 9 months? Good Lord! it makes me wonder if Becca and the boss aren't sleeping together.

Thats wrong that girl becca chose to leave your boss should not favor one person.

Not if Becca is really cute! LOL I do not know if Becca is just outstanding at her job or what the deal is.

I agree this is wrong. I think that woman tend to get mistreated a lot in offices, especially from Male managers and bosses. I believe you girls should address this problem to your boss stating that you don't agree with what happend. its one thing to help someone financially..its another to be kicking ppl from cubicle to cubicle. I think this should be addressed.

The boss shouldn't have done that! I think he mistreated her. How could he favor one employee over another?!
