I would place modern Democrats and the majority of Republicans in the same place - they are identical in everything but name. They have to resort to a couple of "issues" such as the death penalty to try and avoid people realising that they look the same, sound the same, have identical policies that help big business and penalise the poor, and are in all fundamental respects one and the same party.

democratic govts always fall left in ideology. modern day dems are moving toward socialism and modern day reps are moving toward moderate liberals. its the nature of a democracy. this is the reason polls show most people are conservative but only 30 % of population vote. there is no true conservative options in todays politics.
