LINUX - Open source not only lets you use and copy the software for free but also allows you to look at and modify the source code. Having the soure code allows you to customize and modify the complied program your computer runs.

AND Open source provides no copyright restrictions. Anyone can use it for any purpose without obligation to the original author...

Freeware is free to use and copy but does not provide the source code and may have a copyright limitation. i.e. the program must run on Windows a copyrighted OS. the program is free but not the OS to run it on.

Open source is any software that allows you to freely use and copy it without paying a fee.

The most popular open source operating system is Linux. Many of my friends recommend Ubunto linux as the best (easiest) way to get started: http://www.ubuntu.com/

Fedora is another good way to get started with Linux: http://fedora.redhat.com/

FreeBSD is another example of a completely different open source operating system. http://www.freebsd.org/ However, Linux is probably what you want.
