If I was gunning for what a lot of people were going to think was a terrible name, I'd definitely want to know. But even the most polite "Sorry -- it makes me think of (bad association)," "It's too common," etc, gets thumbs-down aplenty in the 'baby names' section. Why on earth? If you're doing the thumbs-downing, pray explain?

Thank goodness for you!!! I was wondering the same thing. What I think is some people get these ideas in their heads and want everyone to agree. They say "be honest" and I think they will give you a big fat thumbs down if you don't write what they want to hear. Even if it's not the asker doing it...it's all about writing what you want to hear. Granted some people are going to say, "Well, the answer was totally against what I'd advise, blah, blah, blah" so they get a thumbs down. I think a well-written answer to advise stuff should have all sides taken into account. However, on "opinion" stuff for names, which your question is referring it, should not have a thumbs down just becuase you don't like that they don't like the name. If they give you some outrageous name like Bamunidadiyamahaki then, sure...give them a thumbs down. Or if they answer "yes" and "no" give them a thumbs down, but for well-written answers, why? So I guess I'm answering your questions with the same question...but thanks for asking it b/c I'm curious to know too! :)

I took the thumbs up/down to be helping the question asker by voting for the one that we think should get the best answer pick. I think i read that somewhere when i signed up.

Not sure if everyone knows that.

I give a thumbs-down rating to answers that I just don't like... whatever the reason.

What really gets me steamed is when someone asks your opinion of a baby name and you tell them honestly what you think and then they report you becuase they didn't like your answer.

Because people on here think they are God and that their answers are gold. They forget that everyone has their own opinions and that it is OK. Perhaps it will change.. but I am not holding my breath about it.

Because some people are sore losers and if you don't agree with them, they can't deal with it.
