For heartwarming I suggest easy reads like Nicholas Sparks books...
"The Guardian"
"Nights in Rodanthe"
"Message in a Bottle" etc.....

Although it was more popular as a movie, "White Oleander" is actually a very good novel with so much about human nature and can be intense but heartwarming as well : ]

" A Tree Grows in Brooklyn"- Betty Smith--a very good read about a young Irish American girl who comes of age in Brooklyn during the 1910's. Very daring novel for it's time and a classic.

" I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings"-Maya Angelou--another classic that tells the story of a young, poor girl growing up in a segregated South while over coming abuse . A story of the triumph and courage.

"Ava's Man"--Rick Bragg--a beautifully written story about a southern man raising his 7 children in the Great Depression. A must read for those interested in a southern culture that has faded over the generations.

"Tobacco Road"--Erskine Caldwell--This is a masterpiece. It's about a family of poor white Georgia sharecroppers that have been displaced due to industrialization. Takes place during the worst years of the Depression.

Pick up something by Bill Bryson ("A Walk in the Woods" is my favorite out of the books of his that I've read). His books are thought provoking, heartwarming, and really funny. Charles Kuralt's "A Life on the Road" is another good one, or "Charles Kuralt's America". I love his "American Moments" and other things on audio book as well.

One of my absolute favorite books is called "Their Eyes Were Watching God" by Zora Neal Hurston. It's not a religious book despite the title, it's about a girl who grows into a woman and doesn't find the love of her life until she's nearly 40 and her 2nd husband has died. This book is full of beautiful language and imagery. The title comes from a quote in the book when they're watching a hurricaine come in as an expression of how powerful the storm is. I don't know if this book warms your heart, but it certainly touches it.
