Sounds like a "good" problem to me if you are talking about the transmission giving you a really good THUMP as it goes to the next gear.

There is a transmission fluid additive in most auto parts stores called "Lucas" which comes in a white plastic bottle. It fixes most transmission problems that are not specifically mechanical. One of the claims that it makes is smoother shifting so you might want to give that a try.

I'd check the recall info. Just go to the Mazda site, it should be on the front page somewhere. It sounds like the modulator is going bad. Or it may be a "performance" thing they did to make people think they had more car than they really did. Also look around for a switch that says "power / comfort" or something like that. You may be driving in "power" mode which will shift harder under load for hills etc..
