There are several good Astronomy programs around. I use 'The Sky 6' by Software Bisque, and it is very powerful, but it may not be the best choice for a beginner. http://www.bisque.com/Products/TheSky6

Starry Night is also very popular: http://www.starrynight.com

I found several others mentioned on this forum after a quick google search: http://www.astronomy.com/ASY/CS/forums/205156/ShowPost.aspx

My favorite Astronomy software is a program called Starry Night Backyard. It lets you view the night sky at any point in history or the future and also has great information on stars and planets. In fact, it will even let you visit some of the planets and zoom in on galaxies. It's totally fun!

I can wholeheartedly recommend Deep Space Explorer, which is made by the people behind Starry Night. It is basically a 3-D map of the universe out to a distance of 700 million light years. It truly is a humbling experience to see one's actual place in the cosmos depicted so graphically. It's terrific for learning more about Galaxies in particular. Starry Night is better for stars and planets within the Milky Way.
