i want to find who lived in my flat before me and history of the flat where do i start (uk only)

You will be able to find out details of previous occupiers by looking at old electoral rolls - go to local Records Office for that (check telephone directory), For details of owners, you need to check the Land Registry.

The Records Office may have further details as to when flat was built, what was use of the land before it was built, etc. Staff should be able to help you.
