A hurtful lie, because even if the truth hurts, it is not hurting the person with a fake. If they find out that it is a lie, it just hurts them more. I agree with the statement "honesty is the best policy". People will be able to trust people who are honest, liars will have rumors spread around about them, and it's just plain easier to tell the truth. Nobody likes people who lie all the time and won't know whether to trust them or not. People get annoyed by people who lie a lot.
Being honest and having a reputation of never lying makes people trust them more. People are more likely to come up to a person who tells the truth and ask them a question. They are more likely to get the right answer and not a lie. People who tell the truth are more respected and aren't looked down at for being a liar. People can be trusted more when they constantly tell the truth. When they ask if they can go out and do something, they are more likely to be able to because others trust them and they don't have to worry.
Liars have rumors spread around about how they lie all the time. Nobody wants to talk to them because they won't know if they are lying to them or not. They aren't trusted as much as people who don't lie. Liars never get very far in life and always have a reputation of lying. It's much better to tell the truth and have friends who trust them, rather than lying and having rumors spread around making no one like them.
It's actually easier to just tell the truth. There are many reasons for this. One reason is, people don't have to think of lame excuses, making it much faster. Another reason is, people who tell the truth won't get in as much trouble when someone finds out that they lied to them. The last reason why telling the truth is better is, people will trust and respect them more.
I agree with the statement "honesty is the best policy". Everyone that reads this should also agree with me. The points I made are very good examples of why people should tell the truth and not lie. People get more respect, trust and more liked than liars.

I believe a hurtful lie, because a harmful truth hurts once -- it is the truth and it hurts. However, a hurtful lie hurts over and over again. It hurts continuously because although whatever was said was painful, it's always going to remain painful that a person does not have the truth. There is always the chance of a re-opened wound.
An example would be, if a person you loved and cared about told you that they had done something bad, that would be a harmful truth. They have lost your respect because you know something bad about them. But, by the same token, you can respect the fact that they came clean with it. You don't have to feel like there's still something between you, because they told the truth. That is damage "contained."
If someone you love told a hurtful lie to you to keep you from finding out the truth, there is not only that hurt between you, but there is still the original lie itself. And there's a chance there will be a number of more lies to cover up that one. And there's also the chance that the truth will come out on it's own, exposing the lie, and that is hurtful. Hurtful lies are just so full of potential hurt that they go on and on.

I personally would rather be told the truth NO MATTER WHAT! I know that people tell us lies because they think they are protecting us but not having all the true and real information is more hurtful. The truth may be upsetting, but if you dont know the truth you cant appropriately deal with the situation. I dont believe there is really a "harmful" truth, because in the end it will set you free. Lying is always hurtful and harmful to us. Well, thats my opinion anyway. Good luck!

The truth is always better. The art is to deliver the truth in such a way as to leave in tact the ego of the person being told. In otherwords, you sometimes have to soften the blow and break bad news carefully and with great concern for the other person's feelings. Deliver the truth in a straightforward, no nonsense way, but use a tone that is both quiet and reassuring. Afterwards, try to find a positive in the situation that might give encouragement to the person who has just received the news. Compassion is your ally when you have to tell a hard truth to someone, anyone.

I think (even though many of the answers he contradict this) that for most people it is harmful truth.
I am one of those people thats has a hard time understanding or adhering to social norms and rules. These rules are the rules that are unspoken but followed to a tee. One of these rules is the rule "do not hurt anothers feelings even if it means lying to them"
Case in point how many times has someone asked you something like "does this outfit make me look fat" or "do you like my new shirt" and you blatenly lie by either saying "no you look great" or "I love it" yet inside you are thinking "gag" The funny thing is society is so affraid to hurt one anothers feelings that the average person usually goes over with thier response to a question.
I am one of the few that if someone asks my opinion I give it. I dont sugarcoat. If someone asks if they look fat and I percieve they do then I tell them that. To me its better to state my honest opinion rather that the person being laughed at in public. Now dont get me wrong I dont say anything if the person doesnt ask. But usually when I respond this way people look horrified and say things like "why are you being mean". This leaves me confused because I am left wondering why they asked in the first place....maybe just begging for compliments...maybe they have a low self esteem. So in personal experience I feel most people have a hard time dealing with truth more than a little white lie so to speak.
On the flip side people often come to me when they an honest opinion because they know they might not like what I have to say but I am not feeding them full of crap.

A harmful lie has no purpose except to destroy the person who receives it. The truth may hurt, but it allows you the fresh breath of reality, which in the end, has a positive effect, even though it hurts. Hurt or Pain is a sign our body gives us to let us know something is wrong. Without pain or hurt, we would not be able to know that there is a serious problem. Tell the truth, even if it hurts.

I would rather someone tell me the truth even if its not what I want to hear because its still the truth....Instead of being told a lie and living like everything is fine and then one day eventually find out the truth and its still bad then you were told a lie and found out anyways so its much worse.

I would say that a hurtful lie is very much worse than the harmful truth. Lies deceives people and they hurt a lot more than the truth.

I would personally want the harmful truth because whoever is saying it is saying the truth, and that counts the most.
A hurtful lie would probably hurt, one because it is hurtful, and two, because it would be a lie.
I believe the truth is always better no matter how mean or even nice.

there will be no liars in Heaven Revelation 22:15{Maketh a LIE} and something I say with reference to the Catholic Doctrine i'm getting From the Catholic people, clergymen, and Popes Writings them self. Documented. there are a number of believers interior the Catholic church. God Loving people yet there are tares in all church homes. My comments in no way bypass to them however the better officers that don't tell their Flock all there is to tell.{no rely what Church} that's the reason in case you have written data of any Church you're examining and you do no longer share this fact and this person loses their faith by using fact of you reported no longer something,or did no longer something, for what ever motives, then their blood is on your hand. Biblical Matthew 27:25,Ezekiel 3:18 playstation we are to love quite a few one yet no longer the sins they're committing whether one knows this in what they're doing or in lack of understanding..out of affection continuously share the reality Written in Scripture, or historic past documented and seen for absolutely everyone to work out..
