I think it is primarily because of tradition. 300 years ago it was new and different. Now, simply what many of us do.
Our family and friends get together had chicken noodles, ham and turkey because of our total number. Also three cakes and five pies.

We in The UK eat Turkey now but a few hundred years ago most people could not afford Turkey so a Goose was Traditionally eaten at Christmas. Also Geese migrate and stop in UK for food, in season if you like. Only the rich could eat Turkey. Over the years turkey became cheaper and could feed more people per bird clearly more desirable.
Or it could be from the Boston Tea Party time when the Americans defeated the English,And the English copied the American Tradition of eating Turkey at thanksgiving.
Take your pick i believe the first one......

You know I was wondering the same thing! I always thought it was a Thanksgiving Turkey and a Christmas Ham but it seems like everyone has turkey on Christmas now to. I personally have ham because I don't like turkey. :)

Turkey is considered by many to be a 'special day' food. it is large enough to feed many people without being overly expensive. There is no real cultural reason for it...but the fact is that turkey and ham are the two most popular holiday foods in the united states.

Traditionally people ate geese because turkey was more expensive (in Europe), but here in America turkey's were abundant so that's what was eaten on special occasions.
