The car cranks...but wont start...I thought it might be a fuel or spark issue...but the car wont even shift out of park. I put the key in, held the brake down and nothing!

I noticed that below the steering wheel, theres a little slot with a light that used to light green, it wasnt lit today. It looks like one of those starguard antitheft thingies (where you need to pop the chip in before you can even start it) but when we bought the car, we were never given the chip or anything...and the light's always been green.

Its a 2000 honda civic dx, I'm not sure how for 2, almost 3 years we've been able to drive it sans chip...any ideas?

You might have to put the key in small hole next to transmission and keep pressing it down and shift to netrual and take out key and start the car. It will start. As its a gear lock that completely locks up your system for safety reason. Cheers.

Well for starters you let your wife try to start it.... just joking... I had this same problem with after market alarm systems. Whoever put it in didn't connect the electrical harness properly to pull power from the alternator instead of the battery. So, the alarm system is just sitting there all night pulling power from the battery and cause that little light to go off because... your battery gets drained all night. Take it to a mechanic and have the system just totally taken out of the car, it's not worth it having them try to re-wire it, just start over with a new one and count your blessings... my car used to shut off when I was on the highway and went under 10 miles per hour stopping at stop lights, I had to get out in the middle of traffic and rotate a fuse to get the starter working again cause there was no power in the battery... good luck, hope this helps..

Hmmmm...try this. Disconnect the battery terminals. BOTH of them.....wait about 20 minutes, then reconnect them.
This is a "hard boot" for the car's computer system. If it's the anti-theft device going crazy, this will reset it.

If that doesnt work, then it's not the anti-theft and it's your starter (could be solenoid or any number of starter-related things). OR fuel pump/relay. Some cars wont shift unless they are started--it's a safety thing.

Have you tried disconnecting your battery for a few minutes and reconnect to see if it removes any trouble codes or resets your anti-theft device?

Ok I don't know the answer but I like people said your battery was dead which didn't explain why you can't put it in neutral.
