It then seems to fire one cylinder at a time until they all fire up. It was fine in the cold weather last year, but has decided to start playing up like my old one used to!

Wow so many people badly guessing whats wrong in one place. Its as likely that your engine is miss firing on start because its full of cold custard as it is the glow plugs being shot because as you know the 2.5 Di has no glow plugs as its a Di engine (should be careful with the custard comment as no doubt someone will use that as a suggestion in future) . Also in my experience it also doesn't have a coil as its a DIESEL and has no spark plugs......First of all check your battery is 101% these engines need at least a 650amph battery to turn the engine over fast enough to create enough compression which creates heat for it to fire, if the battery is even a bit out of condition it will be a pig to start. If the battery is absolutley without doubt A1 check the injectors if the needles are worn or sticking one or more cylinders could be over fueling if so you will get a slight knocking noise as it fires (Diesel Knock) as it burns of the excess diesel. The other thing you can check is the cold start valve near the throttle linkage on the pump as these do play up. Or you could go to your nearest ford dealer and get laughed at on asking them to change your glow plugs, coil and for good measure ask them to drain the excess custard from your engine. Good luck

your glow plugs need changing ..these are fitted to the cylinder head ..in your case four of them ..these are meant to preheat the cylinders before you start up on cold mornings ..they might be working ..but you must give them enough time for the light to go out ..see hand book

I agree with Colin M.

Glow plugs might have died since last year. tha's a whole lot of starts since then. Plus, no offence but it's getting on a bit and if they haven't been changed yet, then they've done well

Sounds like glow plugs. Classic sign they're not preheating properly. Should be easy & cheap to do, have a glance around Halfords.

Could be worn pump or even the coil is damaged.
Diesels are renowned for Coil fatigue
Get a recon Coil and get a garage to fix it that would be my first port of call

where do you live? i.e. do you live in northern Canada where it's minus 20 celsius? if so check your engine block heater if you are plugging it in. if not I'd say check your glow plugs like the other folks are saying

if it runs ok once started
its the glow plugs (does the glow plug light stay on /come back on once started...sure sign )
replace all four

Simplest and cheapest to start with glow plugs, which need to be kept up to date anyway cos they deteriorate.

Fuel is "waxing", or an injector is bad, try an engine block heater
