My parents want to take out a restraining order on someone FOR me. My dad also wants a restraining order for himself from the person (my dad doesn't live in my house, though). I was just wondering if they could do that without my consent and since I am 17 now and will be 18 in 2 months can I have it lifted once I'm 18? How do I do that? The reason they want it is because they don't want me seeing the person and have a tape of him saying he's going to break someones arms or something.....please help, btw, I live in columbus in ohio.
also, exactly how long does it take to put a restraining order in place and how will I know when, or if, it got granted? And....how do I go about lifting it once im 18 if I want to....

In most municipalities, it takes about a day to initiate a restraining order. It takes longer than that to remove a restraining order because it has to be put through a clerical process. (Night-time typists.) You can remove the restraining order when you are 18. Go to the courthouse and ask the person at the front desk which office you need to go to and they will direct you.

When this guy breaks your arms and does even worse things to your family, be sure to wave at the camera on Court T.V. I'm sure I'll be watching.

yes they can [at least here in Florida] as you are a minor they go to court for and on your behalf............the court order states that it is in effect for EVER, now she knows that she can go and get it over turned at 18 and all she has to do is ask the court BUT from the crazy stuff he has done SINCE then I highly doubt she will......order was in place within 5 days for a temp. one and 3 weeks for the 'forever' one

The one for your dad is a separate issue.

Also you will know as your parents will give you a copy of the order [they get it THAT day at the courts] and they then will have to use this and the number when calling the police...we have copies at her school............a copy at the house and copy in the car plus one that she can carry around in her bag............

Dont know about your parents BUT its a pain in the butt to do so MAYBE they have a really good reason beyond what you can see or know about.................

it doesn't take long for a restraining order to be served it really depends on the courts and what kind of backlog they have. there are several kinds and can last from days to years.

sounds like your parents are probably trying to protect you from some 20 something high-school drop out loser...

Your parents CAN do this for you right now and you also can get it lifted.

As a volunteer and a family violence suvivor, though, i warn you- if he's threatening to break people's arms- he will eventually break yours, too.

I know you thin I'm nagging and you're probably rolling your eyes as you're reading this thinking I don't know what I'm talking about.

Ask the pins in my shoulders if they do.

You're so into this jerk you refer to yourself as "JeffsGirl" As opposed to your real name. You need to find your own identity.
It's probably better for you to be done with the guy.

If you are a minor, I think they can do it on your behalf. And if this is a violent person, perhaps you should listen to them. You don't need that.

Good luck.
