ANimals are more clever in many ways, I think there senses make them more aware of their environment but as domestic animals they can learn how to act in a civil way.
I have 2 dogs, I have often said that the world could learn from their behavior, we have multiple beds all over the house, but of course there are favorites. But in years, I have never heard a snarl when one dog is on the bed the other may want to be on. One will stand and stare until the other one leaves, but sometimes that is 15-20 minutes. No growling. The same thing is true for bones and chew toys.
They share water and food. In fact, one will not eat until the other one is there as well and neither one will eat without being told. Try and train your 5 year old to act like this.
They crawl up in the bed when I am up during the day, but when I walk in the bedroom to go to bed, they get up. They know I am the boss and do not have to be told.
Yes, animals are very clever.

There are two reasons for that.
1. Humans' senses grow numb as they live in luxury all their lives. If a child were to be raised in the wilderness, it would be very much more clever than any animal.
2. Humans don't take part in the selective breeding process any more. As a result, the indominant runts that would normally die still pass on their genes.

There are many different types of intelligeces. For instance, birds and wild animals seem to flee the scene whenever a storm or volcanic activity is on the way. How do they know?
They also steer clear of bad food.
So yes, definitely, there are several ways animals are more clever than humans.
It depends on the situation, and the type of intelligence that is required.

It really depends on the type of person you are. If you took the time to listen to your instinct, than the chances of danger happening to you would be reduced. The reason why humans can sometimes not listen to their instinct is because they have developed a sense of self. This sense of self has the abilit y to over-ride instinct. All animlas have instinct. Some may have a more accute sense of smell or hearing, but that does not mean that their instinct is more developed then others. Instinct is instinct. All animals carry it.

Just different, we have a bigger brain and vast capacity for learning. Most animals have a much lower capacity for learning than humans, but are instead driven by instinct rather than acquired knowledge. Bearing in mind that humans are just another animal, we also have instincts that drive us. The simple answer is humans are just animals with big brains.

I laugh when people like Layjc01 bash oil as the root of all-evil. I bet he or she drives a car, buys plastic goods, uses electricity, etc, etc. Wake up if someone waved a magic wand and all the oil was gone overnight the world would collapse into anarchy overnight. Millions of people would die of starvation; the entire world economy infrastructure is dependant on oil. It is a necessary evil and it will not go away in out lifetime. If you think the war in Iraq is bad, with China and India's energy requirement growing exponentially war over limited resources in inevitable!

It's not like dogs don't smoke because they're afraid of lung cancer- they don't smoke because they can't afford cigerettes and they have no thumbs to roll their own. Animals fight to the death over stupid reasons all time. Freud had a theory (at least for humans) that we have a destructive gene that makes us want to destroy ourselves and others. Much of our lives is dealing with our culturvated desires to be part of a civilization verses our innated desires to have sex and break stuff.

This is because humans have free will and animals go by instinct.
An animal will not make the same error twice because his survival may depend on it.
Humans do what they want, they do not have restrictions over behavior unless they want to.

Tell that to the rabbit that I smacked with my truck. As hard as he may have tried he didn't manage to stop me. He might thrown down some sort of bunny Jedi mind trick. But it didn't slow me down at all.
