You have two options, given that insertion of the word "historical". (The project to recover "the historical Jesus" is an interesting one, from Albert Schweitzer, Rudolf Bultmann and on... (URLs) )

The first, if Jesus did not see himself as Divine Redeemer, is his basically his summary of the law and the prophets, as already quoted.

The second, if Jesus did believe himself divine, is his call to believe in him as forgiver of sins and redeemer.
John 3:15-16, John 8:24 and others
The moral teaching is then secondary, because by keeping that, alone, will no-one be saved (even if it could be kept, which it can't!)
So then:
" This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent." Jn 6:29

Orthodox Christians will not like or accept the "ifs" above, but I have replied in the terms of the question.

Boy that would be a hard one to figure out nowadays. You'd think by current and historical teachings that Jesus and God were about persecuting, alienating and forsaking those who are different. Especially those people of color, women and gays. Fear and ignorance was not the core value of Jesus' teachings. Those who carry around a 43 pound Bible don't seem to noticed that Jesus was about helping others especially the poor and needy. Nor do they seem to concentrate their teachings on the 30,000 + Bible sentences about helping the poor, needy and the lame. Helping others?? Why that would be too liberal and we all know Jesus wasn't a liberal . . . Oh wait, yes he was!!

From the Book of Matthew:

22:34-36 - When the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees they came up to him in a body, and one of them, an expert in the Law, put this test-question: "Master, what are we to consider the Law's greatest commandment?"

22:37-40 - Jesus answered him, "'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind'. This is the first and great commandment. And there is a second like it: 'You shall love your neighbour as yourself'. The whole of the Law and the Prophets depends on these two commandments."

Take all of the rabbinical teachings and the teachings of the Torah, put them into terms that the laypeople of the time could understand and you'll have the teachings of Yehoshua bin Yosef (Jesus)..

Most of the sayings accredited to Yehoshua are phrases and teachings that come straight from the Tanakh (old testament)..

Love other Humans.Take care of them that cannot take care of themselves. Dont worry about stuff. Be nice. If you havent got a good thng to say, dont bother speaking.Pay the taxman what he wants, coins are just shiny objects that have no real value, if a man feels that many coins makes him happy, give him all the coins that you have, your load will be lighter and he will be happier, for a time.
But Love all. Love yourself, Love the beggar, the leper, love the woman, love the one that wants to kill you, love the one that stole your shiney rings.
You can have all the shiney things that are in this world, but without Love you have nothing.
This is what that guy was teaching us, and it makes sence.

He was a prototype for all of man kind, the example of what man is capable of when submitted to God's spirit. Each of us can be like Jesus by choosing to promote life and not death. Every time we choose to encourage good we bring His teachings to life, God is not a distant task master, rather a loving Father.

He was the first born Son of God that opened the door for all of us to become God's children by partaking of the same, God's spirit.

Matthew 22:37-40 Love

37. Jesus said unto him, "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
38. "This is the first and great commandment.
39. "And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
40. "On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets."

Philippians 2:3-7 Humility

3. Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.
4. Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.
5. Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:
6. Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:
7. But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:

Matthew 6:14-15 Forgiveness

14. For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you:
15. But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

Mankind feels the need to be in control. We started to learn that our lives our out of our control. So we created Law. That didn't do it either. So we created guilt. Nope So we created religion. Something that combines both in a way. The story of Jesus tells us a story of a man that loves us all and gave his life for us. Or so we've been told. The concept of as I see it is this, we can't control the world with law, so we use the unknown to help control it. If you're good, you'll be rewarded with eternal bliss in the clouds with Jesus. If you're bad, you'll be paying for your actions while alive for all eternity. Jesus was created to promote love and peace to try control the behavior of mankind on a global scale.

Siddha yoga, with its guru diciple relationship. "God dwells within you as you." with much vedanta philosophy. There was no organization to "Join", just spiritual practices. See www.stephen-knapp.com/articles_to_read, and syda.org/theguru. Christianity and islam have their roots in the vedas, siddha yoga, vedanta and hinduism. Jesus taught meditation, mantra repetition, reincarnations and the guru diciple relation. See romans 8-29, this discribes the guru deciple relationship.
