It is most likely a problem with your video card. The first thing you should try doing is seeing if there are updated drivers for your card. You can do this by going to the website of the maker of the card. You could also try to see if your video card is in the slot all the way. If it's hanging out a little bit, it could cause a problem. If that doesn't do it, then you have an outdated video card, or a card that can't handle the graphics of the game. In this case, just about the only thing you can do is purchase another card. If it comes down to you purchasing another card, make sure you buy a card that's compatible for your machine. The three types of slots for cards are AGP, which is the oldest and is not as fast as the newer ones, PCI, which is in between, and PCI-Express, which is the fastest and most recent type of card.

It could be your video card. Does your desk top appear when this happens? If so it is not the video card but the software with in the game. If you have to reboot to get to desk top then your video card may have problems with it.

its happend to me once and the game has totally quit and all unsaved data is gone
