I admit there are guitarists with both attributes (skills and originality) but that is very rare; just from personal experience. Ive seen that the people with skills are those who took lessons from an instructor or school, and those with the creativity taught themselves how to play. I never took drumming lessons, and that helped me be creative and original; i just started playing guitar, and i hope i can get creative.

Well, I love metal, and what I love about metal is the way that even if you took away the singer, the lead guitar will continue to sing that song.

If i was starting a band, I would want a guitarist with kick *** skills of course, but i think that unique abilty and creativity is more important because metal is unique... Its not just aobut screaming and headbanging... Its about that last stand...

Guitars back up the singer... Just like drums back up the crowd and bass backs up the drums...

Really, you have to look at, what is most important about your band that you want the most support at.

Oh so you'd cheat?

if I'm not allowed to do the same thing then I'll take the one with the creativity who can't play a note. Then get someone else to be the guitarist.

I'd go with creativity, personally, but more than that I would value his DEPENDABILITY. I've been a musician for 40 years, and one of the top "worst" traits (and not just for musicians) is lack of dependability.

I can't take working with people who aren't really serious about their music; at least to the point that you can count on them to learn/rehears their parts prior to rehearsal.

I've been fortunate in that I've worked with some really fine musicians over the years, and seen some pretty sad ones ~ the kind where the music is just something to entertain them when they're high......

creativity and originality. both are very good, but just bc someone has skills, doesn't mean they can work with what they are given and turn it into something beautiful, like a kick *** song.

Both and have guitar battles instead of solos. Both guitarists ripping out to see who does better

Both.
The skills would be the bass guitar and the creativity would be electric guitar

Why not one with both? Robert Fripp, Adrian Belew, Pat Metheny... quite a few of those around.
