It can be both, depends on the industry.
If you aren't going into finance, then probably just criminal background check.

it depends on the job you are trying to get. My company for instance, does background checks. If you are applying for a job in accounting, then they will do a credit check. It makes sence if you are late on your bills, then how will they know that you will not be late w/the company money.

They are definitely checking criminal history.
some places check your credit. (which I think is wrong!!)
