on it calcium from the water maybe? Anyways it looks very ugly how do I get it off without hurting the critters? I don't want to take them out and clean it either.

You can use a straight edge razor or an algae scrapper from the petstore and just scrape it right off. You could also use vinegar but I think the razor is easier and safer for the animals.

A mechanical method of removal is preferred, as any chemical will get into the water and may adversely affect the fish.

That is just hard water stains, they are easily removed with an algae scrubber and elbow grease.
