The fish aren't stupid, you, your mother and her boyfriend are. Learn how to properly care for them or stop buying them just to kill them.

ick is a pre-existing parasite that resides in fish aquariums. Fish when they are stressed out will shed off their slimey exterior coat that protects them from parasites, intern the parasites that are already in the tank lay eggs on the fish. If this goes untreated by the owner of said fish, they will die off. Treatment is simple use a product like "rid-ick" or "ICK attack" from local petsmart or other like store. Dose Tank with recommend amount daily for a full week to catch the cycle of hatching ick eggs, REMemeber to remove the Filter Cartridge form the filter as it will pull the meds out from the water. You will want to do a water change not more than 50% after the week treatment because of the filter cartridge being removed. Then place New cartridge into filter. You may want to do some research on the type of fish you want. Find a good aquarium, not a regular pet store, and speak to someone there about setting up a proper environment for your new fish. But before you do that scrub out the tank and think about getting new equipment and decor to keep the new fish from getting sick.
