Personally, I have to say Mike McCready from Pearl Jam is excellent and very underappreciated (anybody who saw him live has to agree, I think) and Tom Morello from Audioslave/Rage has to get some consideration for his creativity and skill.

Any thoughts?

I will have to say right now that Ameilia will have the best Answer when I am permitted to vote. Just warning you all...

Julia,
I do agree with your statements re: my early annointment of Amelia as the winner. I will consider all. Nevertheless, "current and living" means just that, somebody who is currently relevant and still alive. Therefore, somebody like Page who hasn't made music in several years would not apply, in my opinion.

David Gilmour. His guitar solos and musical riffs and melodies graced Pink Floyd's recordings and live shows to make them one of the greatest if not the greatest rock band ever. You would have to include Jimmy Page and Slash in the conversation as well. All the other greats, Hendrix, Stevie Ray, etc., are resting in peace.

Maybe I should just copy Amelia's answer and then I can get best answer. too! Not to deny McCready and Morello's respective talents.. but c'mon.. that's just throwing your statement back at you! A question is better asked without your answer attached to it, wouldn't you agree?

"Current and living" may not be be best way to phrase your question.. Living guitarists include Clapton, Santana, Page, Gilmour and so, so many more.. they may not have released anything in the last little bit, but certainly their talents can't be denied.

Had enough of my lecturing? Sorry.. Here's my answer: John Mayer has to be one of the best new guys out there.. My opinion. Perhaps he leans a bit toward the blues, but what a guitarist he is!

The greatest guitarist of our time is the greatest musician of our time. The Artist Currently known as Prince can make a guitar sing a song by itself and make Country & Classical fans like it just as well.

Not as well known as some others, but John Petrucci of Dream Theater is a technically brilliant guitar player.

I was going to say Mike McCready when I saw your question! Your name is hilarious, too. Huge Audioslave fan myself... general Chris Cornell worshipper, in fact. :)
