There have actually been 5 presidents who were never elected to the office of president:

John Tyler, Millard Fillmore, Andrew Johnson, and Chester Arthur were all elected as vice-presidents, took over the office of president and then lost or did not run again...

Gerald Ford was never elected as president or vice-president, succeeding Nixon and then losing to Jimmy Carter. Ford was elected to Congress, of course, but not to the executive branch....

I always remember that the four presidents that died in office in the 19th century had Vice President's finish out their term (and nothing else). The replacement of the four President's who died in the 20th century all went on to win their own election. President Nixon is the only President who resigned his office. Ford was chosen as Vice President when Agnew resigned fr two reasons (1) he was next in the line of succession for President anyway, and (2) he told people he would not to run for President. He changed his mind about running after Nixon resigned and he became President. --------------------------------------... A good trivia question that you can look up is "How many times and for how long has the office of VP been vacant?" It's a very large number. Part of the answer is that 7 times out of 8 when the President died in office, the VP assumed the presidency and the VP office was left vacant. In other cases the VP resigned or he died. = It shows how important the office actually is if it could be left vacant so often.

Ford was never elected to the VP or the Presidency. Jefferson was elected by the House.
