i'm writing a novella and one of the character's car dies. I need to know how to describe it, i'm in a rut here, will someone please help me out?

Rattling, whining, squeeling, back firing, knocking, shaking, smoking, uneven speeds of engine itself even.

Hope these help. It's how my last car died on me.

Berrrrrrruuum.

Actually, there are many ways for an engine to die. If you lose ignition the above would probably happen. If it blows up while you're racing away, it'd probably go BraaaaAAAPOW!

Personally, I'd go with something like, "Suddenly the engine began to choke and sputter. He mashed down on the accelerator and was rewarded with a sick popping sound. Desperation gripped him as the car slowed to a helpless crawl. He pulled over, still turning the key, and getting only the forlorn whine of the starter motor for his trouble."

It would depend on whether or not you have personified the vehicle , the way you describe its demise
