It is not the "root" speaking. But It is a major factor of one of the few things that can lead to unhappiness. Comparison, well can cause suicide. It makes us feel worse then we are, it gives us illusion son perfection. It's horrible. The root to unhappiness is probably no love, Love covers all offenses.Love is the greatest gift to mankind, those who never felt it, or have it in their heart, are doomed to unhappiness.

In part, yes, but there are other factors to unhappiness including chemical biological makeup. Some are more easily depressed than others because of genes. Yet comparison could depress the hell out of people if they strongly envy something someone else has and chances are they will never get.

A definite NO. I would say , if anything , some comparison could be a source of happiness! . strange but true. " Look. I am better than so many others...." could be a stimulant for being happy with what we have.

Root of unhappiness is the unending desire to get material things. In the process of our acquring these we may tend to compare. That is about it.

Never thought about it before, but now that I am I think you are right. If we could accept ourselves for who we are and accept others for who they are. If we could be happy for others successes and acheivemnets without comparing ourselves to see how we fall short we would be much happier people.

But, at the same time to comparision can cause competition and sometimes we work best when there is competition. I mean, if you can get a gold award and others have received a gold award before you and others in the race you are now running are going for the gold award the competition to get the gold award can cause you to work harder than ever thought possible. For me in that case even if I miss out on the gold award an others get it, you feel sad for a while but then looking back I feel proud of all my hard work and for overcoming the challenges.

Conclusion: comparision can be the root of unhappines but use compaision to fuel friendly competition and always be proud of your acheivements.

Never really thought about it before but it could be! Perhaps this is why I am suddenly so unhappy! I just started a Myspace page and when I look at all of my old buddies they are so successful. I am not and have been very unhappy about it since, but before I was fine.

So the answer it yes!

It depends on many things. We can compare ourselves with others and be jealous of them and be unhappy, or we can compare ourselves with others and be quite pleased and affirmed.
So on balance, I dont think that comparison per se is at the root of unhappiness. If you find comparing yourself makes you unhappy then possibly it's your insecurity which is causing it - or your jealousy of them.
hope this helps
Happy New Year

Where is the comparison coming from?

If you are comparing yourself to someone that seems happy then I guess so. That stems from a deep desire that will not be met by looking outward at others and comparing your life to theirs. The reason? Because they are doing the same thing.

The Joneses are to blame somewhat. Keeping up with thm does cost the pretty penny. And in the process they become the baddies. It does cause unhappiness.

Comparing is looking to others, how they live and what they have rather than being content with ones own life. This could lead to unhappiness...there will always be someone who has it better and someone who has it worse...being content is the key to happiness.
