I am of the opinion that manufacturers do this to frustrate drivers. I have two cars from the same company with the openings on two different sides. There are even one or two cars that I have seen that fill from the rear.

depends on the car. some cars have gas tanks under one side or the other, and sometimes it all about the routing of the filler neck, but more and more cars are going to drivers side fillers, the chevy caprice had the fill under the license plate for a few years gave the car a cleaner look

there's a hose clap the place it hooks to tank that must be unfastened or if every person has ever taken the tank out ( like for putting in a gasoline pump) there's a seal around the precise of tank the place the pump is going out and in of the tank, so if tightening the clamp does not paintings, then the leak is likely coming from the precise of the tank the place the gasoline pump is going out and in. at situations once you overfill the tank with gasoline it could leak out the spout filler tube and teach a leak. This tube replaced into no longer designed for containing gasoline so in no way overfill and quit whilst the gasoline shuts off on the pump. stable success!

Both of my american SUV's Durango and Explorer have the filler on the driver side. I liked the old american 70's style wehn the gas filler was behind the license plate... my old 75 Camaro was like that.

Not always, it depends on the maker. You are right though they should be on the left side because it is easier at the pumps, but not everything is easy. :)
