The best thing you can do is get with an experiened cheerleader. If you have friends already on the team ask them to help you. Have them teach you cheers and dances. As a coach, I can tell you that sticks out a lot. I love it when new girls come prepared because of work they've done on their own time.
You will be taught a lot of what you need to know at practices, I'm sure.
If you want to get a head start, ask the other girls for help, start doing a lot of conditioning to get your body in shape for stunting and tumbling, maybe even sign up for a tumbling class for the spring and summer.
Good Luck!

It depends on your team. I see that some highschool teams don't do tumbling and some don't do flying...I think that's what it's called.
Anyways, I think you'd do best with starting out with cardio training, strength training, and basic gymnastics. I think round offs, cartwheels, and splits are necessary, but I'm not entirely sure. Maybe you'd like to start at a gym and do tumbling classes...or I heard at some gymastic gyms do special cheer camps and have cheer classes. Do cardio so you can stay or become in a more fit shape. Then strength training so you can do pyramids, flying, and stunting.
Hoped this helped.

Just make sure your body is in shape after that no ones in the stands will notice if you mess up to much as long as you look good.
