Probably a democratic west (Australia, US/Canada, Western Europe). Sad, but it was fun while it lasted.

All the answers which say 'the USA' beg the question that that country doesn't have an Empire, certainly not in the way the word has been understood up until now. It has invaded a few countries, but has not annexed them. I think it has one or two minor overseas dependencies (Puerto Rico?), but nothing on the scale of the Roman Empire. It has an economic empire, to be sure, (e.g.MacDonalds, Hollywood, it's appalling TV programmes exported everywhere) and that could last as long as the dosh keeps rolling in. But it is beginning to fall - just consider the sale of IBM to China. What might happen is that the USA will itself fall apart, if politics between, say the East Coast and the Mid West become more and more polarised. There is no Empire like the Roman Empire in the world today. The British Empire was dismantled virtually by agreement. The Soviet Empire collapsed at the end of the 1980s.

Previous answerers haveit right...the United States, and to a very small extent The United Kingdom (england) are the only two countries that would qualify as "empires" in the 21st century. The US is following the Roman Empires decline....its hard to say this, but, if Americans don't begin to take an active hand in their government, its gonna fall.

America is the only Empire currently in existence and it is following the same path that the Roman Empire did (corruption in government with false democracy, laziness of the population that are more absorbed in material things and an overextended army. Just a matter of time. To above answerer: Korea and China are not empires.

America is complacently walking down that path with all the corruption, greed and religious propaganda. It's ripe and ready for a major tumble probably within the next 50 yrs. America itself will survive because her people are beginning to come out of their stupor but I doubt they will wake up in time to really save this country. The core values America was built on will survive though. Which isn't such a bad place to start all over again.
The nice thing is that the Bush family of greed and war mongers will leave this country for "greener" pastures. Just like their nazi ancestors did.

If you're truly asking this question, here's an interesting article written by a British journalist highlighting the similarities between the United States and Ancient Rome. It was written four years ago, but it's still pretty pertinent today.

America is the only nation right now worthy of being called an empire.

My history instructor states that she thinks that in the future, America will split up into regions, like the NW, California, New England, the South, so on.
She thinks this will happen because of political similarites and similarities of values and beliefs.
