I was applying for a job with BoFA and everything indicated I was going to get it, but yesterday they called me to tell me the backgroung check came back "not satisfactory" which was great surprise as I never failed one before. My husband is in the army and I have had tons of backgroung checks done on me before. What is the truth about this damn backgroung checks, can I get a copy? I live in TX.

I am almost certain that all states have laws in place that state that if you are denied a job on any basis, they must be fully forthcomming in explaining why they did not hire you. I would write the HR department, which probably has all of the necessary information, and ask them to send you a copy of the report. You have a right to know what they found, or thought they found, in your background that made you unsuitable for employment.

I'm not sure what BoFA is (sorry) but I've had background checks to get contract jobs with the US gov't and they really do contact every name and organization you put on the forms. I know of someone who applied for an office job in a correctional facility and she had a minor traffic violation red-flagged. You should be able to get a copy...or at the very least, they owe you an explanation as to what exactly on your background check they find unsatisfactory. I think it's worth pursuing. Good luck!

i would put a letter in the mail to BoFA requesting an immediate explanation for the NOT SATISFACTORY response. ask to SEE verification that this background check did take place and DID get the results you were informed of.
a background check is looking for any one or more of the following:
--dismissal from a prior job/reasons
--difficulty with previous employers/co-workers
--any criminal activity during previous employments
--for a history of absences from work
--a history of being late arriving at work
--any unacceptable behavior
you also have a right to demand to know WHO gave the negative response. if you secure this information, and if you feel comfortable doing so, contact the culprit to voic your opinion.

Did you fail the background check or a credit check. Most companies these days will run both and not actually indicate which one you failed. If it's a bank most likely culprit is the credit check.

Subscribe to a service and run one of each on yourself to see what is showing up.

I'm not sure if they must provide a copy to you or not.

They may feel that since your husband is in the Army, you will move when he does. The time in training you (invested) would be lost..in other words they may have bee looking for longevity and used the background as an excuse.

Hmmm, interesting. I think you can do one on yourself, check out equifax or something. You'll have to pay for it, but I dont think it is that much.
