You shouldn't need one at all and you shouldn't use one. Check with your teacher to see if you will be allowed a calculator on your tests. If not, practice without one. Algebra is more about problem solving than arithmetic so normally the actual math is very easy and doesn't require a calculator. The challenge is normally knowing how to handle the problem as it is presented to you.

well, i teach elementary algebra and i suggest that the entire course can be done without a calculator. If you would like to use one I often suggest a TI 30xa, its about 10 bucks and you can find one just about anywhere.
If you are looking for a type of calculator, go for a scientific one, be sure that your not purchasing a graphing or financial calculator.

You probably don't need anything fancy for elementary algebra, but you might as well go ahead and get a TI-83 or better. You will definitely need it later when you go to more advanced classes.
