1st and 2nd are good for:
A: using the engine to slow you down on a steep grade
B: Spirited driving (shift like a manual)
C: Controlling the trans when towing something heavy
D: Getting Unstuck (1st) you don't want it to shift when the tires are spinning and then get traction in a higher gear.
E: 2nd is good for taking off on slippery surfaces - Most people don't know this but if you start off with the lever in 2nd (it starts in first anyway), it will cut the engine power and slow the shifts. This gives you the effect of taking off very slow and cautiously, which is what you need if you are driving on a slippery surface (ice) so you don't spin the tires. Try it sometime, it makes you car feel sluggish.

Depending on the gearing of the vehicle I will normally use first & second gear if I am decending a very steep hill (depending on the speed), this allows the motor to hold back your vehicle rather than sitting on your brakes.

As well some of the manualmatic shifters (Automatic but can shift like a manual) you can use this in city traffic a lot. I use my manualmatic on my SRT8 when I want to decelerate decrease the use of my brakes and increase the life of my brake pads and calipers. As well I will slap the stick into 2nd gear to jump on the throttle when I want to get up and go at the appropriate speeds for the gearing of the car.

2nd gear is useful when pulling a haevy load and going up or down moderate hills. 1st gear is for really steap hills. I have also a 3rd gear that I use when I need a tad more power on an incline or in snow.

When towing a load...Also, if you're in an area w/ alot of snow, its a good idea to drop the gear down unless you're a careful driver; helps you keep your speed down and keep you from spinning out (I'm a Michigan boy....Lotsa snow)

it doesnt, it only uses 1st. when you put it in 2nd, it uses 1st and 2nd, then drive, or over drive uses 1st, 2nd, 3rd, then overdrive if there is one
