At the end of the movie, the narrator (the boy as an adult) says that Skip died of old age while he was away at Oxford. His father found him laying on his bed. He also says that his father and Skip became the best of friends.

Skip eventually died of old age. At the end of the movie, you hear the young boy who grew up and tells you what happened to skip.
