sounds like you have an old Honeywell T 87 stat. leave it alone unless it is broken. you will not save any money by playing with the stat. if you are comfortable at 68 leave the stat at 68. if you like it to be 72...leave it at 72.

when you let a house cool off you let everything in the house cool off, and everything in the house needs to be warmed back up. the same goes for the summer....leave it alone unless you are gonna be gone for a few days.

read through this forum and take a look at all the folks who have tried to change their stats, and the furnace no longer works. that should encourage you to at least have a pro change the stat if you do decide to ignore this pro's humble advice. lastly if you do have the stat changed, order one through the hvac guy. dont insult the hvac guy and waste your money by trying to get him to install a cheap stat that a home owner can buy.

I would say the digital thermostats are better because of the preset settings feature. It is more cost efficient because it automatically sets down the settings when you are sleeping rather than you having to remember to do it.

No, while digital is more expensive, it will pay for itself within a couple of months if you set it to be cooler at night and while you are away. Otherwise the two would be the same if you set the digital to the same temperature all the time.

the benefit of the digital thermostats is that you can program temperature settings for various times of the day to maximize your energy and cost savings. for instance you can lower the temperature for the period of the day when you are out at work, and then have it warm up again for the time period when you come home, lower it for the time you are in bed asleep, warm up for morning wake up, etc... a 5 degree change in temp can save you a lot on your energy bill.

Digital are light years beyond the round ones. The better ones allow for different schedules throughout the day and also on weekends.

That they save money is beyond dispute, except for morons.

Doesn't matter. I have always been told by a couple of friends who are HVAC guys that it is cheaper to keep your house at one set point than to constantly keep changing the temp. Time it and compare the two. See how long your'e unit stay running when set constant temp. Then lower temp. a couple to 5 degrees and bring it back up to temp. You'll see a huge difference in run time.
