I believe that the main diference is in the targeting, we target combatants, not civilians, however more often then not, civilian lives are lost due to our actions, but we dont purposly target them. It is called collateral damage, basically a smart bomb can only be so smart. we do try to keep it to a minimum.

Now terrorist use soft targets ( Civilians ) insted, because they are not trying to obtain a military victory over a military superior adversary, that would just be crazy. They go after the polical will of their adversary wich makes mucho more sense to them. They try and do inflict fear on popuations by kiddnaping, beheading, and so on.

The Marines are a part of the military, and they have rules of engagement. They only fight in times of war, and they only do so when first attacked. Terrorists will kill anyone -- men, women, children, civilian and military targets alike -- just to attempt to advance their political goals.

Suicide terrorist squads kill innocent people because they are of a different religion.

Military personnel like the Marines protect us from those freaks.

See, one side is killing innocent people, and one side is protecting us from those killers.

What's the difference between your boss giving you a check at the end of a work week, and you going to a bank and stealing money? What's the difference between someone kidnapping someone and us putting that person in jail and restricting his freedoms?

Get it now, or do you need smaller words?

The terrorist squads are fighting for liberation while the the marines fight for order. Order in this case does not mean good order, only order. This war reminds me of the movie Ben-Hur, early in the movie they say that you can kill people, but it's harder to kill an idea. The idea here is liberation from what they see as a supressive force.

Suicide terrorist squads kill indiscriminately. Miltary personnel are supposed to kill the terrorists only (save for accidental civilian deaths).

That's one HUGE difference.

I remember the line from "Collateral Damage" when the terrorist group leader claims he and Ahnold are the same, but Ahnold says they aren't because, "I'm only gonna kill YOU".

Marines do not include in their mission their own death as a DESIRED goal.

Terroists target non-military targets; Marines do not. Colonists fighting for freedom may or may not have engaged in terrorism. By that definition, native Americans engaged in terrorism against whites too.

Marines try very hard to avoid collateral damage.

Terrorists intentionally target civilians, women, and children.

In the Iraqi war one would be considered the liberating force and the other an opressing force. Which is which would depend on who you ask.

As a former Marine we fight/fought to defend freedom, not to oppress and force our "religious beliefs" on all "infidels". There is a big difference.

That's where the similarities end. The US military kills in wartime only, and only to protect themselves. Terrorists have no rhyme or reason. They kill just to kill.
