make sure you have a wireless adapter on the computer you are trying to connect, if you have make sure its connected and switched on if not you can buy a usb wireless adapter for your computer for about £10 - 15 from your local computer shop.

If both computers have a wireless network adapter, then the only patch cable you need will go between the router and your broadband modem.

Here's what to do:

1) make sure both machines have a wireless netwk card
2) Connect 1 pc to the router w/ a patch cord to configure the router
3) Set the router as a dhcp server (probably default setting)
4) set wireless network cards in pc's as dhcp clients
5) Set ssid (network name) in router and on pc's
6) Set wep key under router security and same in advanced settings for wireless cards
7) Also recommend turning off broadcast of the ssid on the router

All of these steps should be in the user's guide w/ your router.

Good luck

configure your router using the faster or newer computer...then the old one can be hard wired into the router. This is how I set up my father's network.

Question...do your computers both have ethernet cards? does at least one of them have a wireless card that can get a connection wirelessly? and have you followed any of the instructions in your routers box? i don't understand to be honest.

With the wireless router, you don't need to plug directly into the router (except the modem - your internet connection). Usually, one computer (desktop) will be plugged into the router directly but it doesn't have to.

What you may be missing is the wireless network interface on the computers. many models. you can use a card that plugs into the desktop, or a usb plugin for desktop or laptop. most laptops have built in 802.11g.

the insturctions with the router should explain how to set up a network. you can also go to the website for the brand of router for more instructions.

If the other computer is wireless, just make sure the adapter is turned on and it should automatically prompt you that a new wireless network is detected...just connect to it and away you go.

you'll need a wireless adapter to attach to the second computer allowing it to pick up the router. best to have a look at ones that are compatable with your router.
