Well the word gay has two meanings
Gay means happy, and the french also use the word gay to express how happy they are
Gay also means when a male/female likes the smae sex/gender etc.

It's from the OF "gai" which meant happy or carefree. It later evolved to mean "not caring about morality" and assumed a sexual connotation. In then late 1950's homosexuality was still considered a psychological disorder, and the Liberation Movement need a different term, the current euphemisms of the day, like fairy or queer, were deemed insulting so they went with gay. It became mainstream in the 60s and now has the meaning of homosexual.

It used to mean "happy". Now it means "happy as long as you are having sex with someone of your same gender".
