How do babies know when to laugh/smile at something?

For instance, when somebody makes a funny face or noise at them, how do they know to laugh and giggle at this instead of taking it as threatening or seeing it as just a normal part or daily life?

Babies and young children are very good at picking up people's vibes and energy. They can sense your mood and intentions and respond accordingly.

a baby watches your every day expressions and when you make a funny face they asume that you are playing and they can tell by the tone in you voice when you are talking normal and when you are playing. But most babies just like to laugh they will laugh at pretty much anything.

They take their cues from our facial expression. You could be saying something really horrible but if you use a happy voice tone they will laugh.

each baby has his or her own personality and they learn by watching mommy and daddy. so if you think its funny and laugh then they will but if a noise scares you then they will be scared.
