you should be able to disable any scan that it is performing. on the icon on the right, right Click on that icon and see what scan is occurring. if you can't tell, there there probably isn't a scan being run. You might be confusing an AVG scan with something else that is happening. I really don't know what to tell ya....good luck....could it be downloading an update or something?

AVG does NOT run in the background unless you tell it to. I had the same trouble only a few days ago - everything was going slowly and the Orange light was doing its nut for half the morning, and when I clicked onto "Launch AVG Test Centre" (r/click on AVG icon on the task bar) AND THEN on to "Scheduler" I found I'd somehow clicked onto the "do complete test every 'x' hours" button some time previously by mistake. Simply knock that out - make sure you keep the "regular updates" set properly - and that will end your problem.
Best wishes, Happy New Year!

Add: This did NOT show up on the Task Manager (r/cl on the clock etc) whilst it was all happening!!!

Normally this is enough, you could try clicking on the word scan in your AVG then find the schedule and set this to once a week at a giving time, for example once a week on Friday at 20:00 (8:0pm) and see if this sorts out the problem, what ever you do don't disable any type of scan for your computer could be at risk.

You want to pause or cancel a running scan? Click on the icon in the taskbar, it should bring up the Test Center. From here, the scanning progress, along with an option to "pause" or "cancel", can be seen.

Are you getting the notice that AVG won't be free after 1.15.07?
(I'm still running 7.1)

The Control center has a box titled "scheduling", from where you can set the desired scan schedule. Notice at the bottom are two boxes: Scheduled Tasks & Properties.

It is pretty much unnecessary, and slows down your computer. You can disable both auto-updating and automatic-scanning. Open its control center, click on 'Scheduler' > Scheduled Tasks. A windows showing a 'test plan' and an 'update plan' will appear. Select both, one after the other, and click on Edit Schedule. Disable both the test plan and the update plan. Thats it!!!

Note: Remember to manually update your AVG DAILY, and manually scan your computer every 5-10 days, if you are going to disable the feature.

when an anti virus scans on start up, it is just scanning the boot sector, which is not the entire hard drive, to me personally i would rather have a security centre running in the backround protecting me when i am using the computer than just check on start up when if a virus was found it would be to late.

if you want to stop the avg altogether just click on start> run> type msconfig> start up tab. then untick the box next to avg and that will stop the program running leaving it manual use only.

if your computer is slow, try turning off all other programs on startup, depending on what os you use would change the programs you need to turn off,

Good question. I'd like to know the answer too.

Before my AVG full scans started at 8am if my pc was switched on.

With recent new AVG installed, it will start immediately to full scan, whatever time the pc is switched on, simply as it didn't scan at 8am the day before.

I'd like my AVG to scan just once a week or something... its frustrating for it to start each time I turn my pc on as its immediately on the go with a full scan. Schedule - not right click cancel scanning though needed for me.

I'll tell in steps.

01.Open avg test center
02.Click 'tests' from file menu
03.Select 'scheduled daily test'
04.A window will appear and remove the tick of the first box in the window.

Your problem will be solved. But don't forget to run a virus scan at least once a week.

Any antivirus program out there will leave an active program in the taskbar...

You can disable that, but then your machine won't be scanning for viruses in new emails & files you open up unless you restart windows...

You want to leave your virus sw active at all times

AVG stays resident and scans all files created to make sure you don't get any viruses on your computer.
