I was wondering if that was classified as racism at the scene when Sarah Jessica Parker said that no one would want their child to be gay, because as much as I am an advocate for gay rights, there is some sense in not wanting a kid to grow up the intolerance and hatred for the gays that there is in this country.

I guess that I am trying to understand if this would be considered a discriminating thought against the homosexual community.

Although it's been said, Racism is discrimination based on a person's race, not sexual orientation.

I think that sjp was being somewhat insensitive, but her point was that no parent would wish their child a life of discrimation or hardship. Life is hard enough. The real issue was when she said anyone would want their child to be "normal", implying that it is not normal to be gay, which is obviously silly talk.

1. Racism is about RACE not sexual orientation.

2. It was a movie. It's art. She was playing a character. It wasn't reality.

3. No. I don't think it's discrimination to want a straight child. Gay children have to suffer a lot of abuse from society. Some people just want to protect their kid from abuse.

One point too. The child does not exist yet. How can you discriminate against a child that does not exist?

4. REAL discrimination happens when someone has a child that is gay and the parents react very badly because the child is gay.

OMG you took that line the same way the Stone family did! TOTALLY WRONG!
She was simply saying that no parent would wish their child to have to go through being harassed, bullied, a life of hardship...simply because of who he/she loves. I totally got the climate the line was written in, too bad you didn't quite get it.

Don't take the line out of context. Remember that Diane Keaton's character had previously said she wished all her son's had been born gay so that no woman would ever take them away from their mother. That line was just as rude and insencitively written.
It was simply an argument between two women over a man. A mother for her son and a girlfriend for her boyfriend who happens to be the older woman's son.
It's a typical struggle and humorously written.

Well, I'm not a homosexual, but I thought it was a very rude and insensitive thing to say, but not necessarily discriminatory.
