We have a extra credit project at my school for chemistry. We have to freeze a Steel pipe and shatter it. What is the best chemical to use?

I would say get some liquid nitrogen.....it's very cheap and easy go get.....and if you can cool the pipe far enough before putting into the nitrogen all the better. You won't boil off too much of the liquid N2 that way.

Sounds like fun. :)

Liquid Nitrogen.
It really shatters the steel.
Be cautious while handling though!!
