40 YEAR OLD HOUSE WITH OLD STYLE HANDLES IN SHOWER ARE LEAKING, WANT TO REPLACE WASHER OR WHAT EVER IS INSIDE.

In my house only the sinks & toilets have shut-off valves.
When we replaced our shower we had to turn off the water at the street. They say to call & have it done but you can just pull the cover off (probably out in your yard somewhere - ours is between the sidewalk & the street) and use pliers to turn the valve off. Just be sure to have someone inside checking for leaks when you're out there turning it back on.
Good luck.

Three part answer:
1. if faucet has hot water handle AND cold water handle, hot water could be turned off at water heater and valve seat replaced, for that side.
2. main water valve is usually only cut off for showers.
3. If valves are that old you may not find valve seats or any other parts,
if you can't find any maker name or info you might have to take one side
with you to plumbing supply.

P.S. disassembly may take special tools! get info and advice first.

You may not have shut off valves located inside your home that is fairly new in the plumbing world. You may have to shut the water off at the meter in your yard unless you have a stop and waste valve at the outside spigot

You will most likely have to shut off the water to the whole house at the meter to work on the shower valves.

Just find the main valve for your house and shut off all the water, It will be easier.

Check on opposite wall behind shower head side. If it is against an outside wall and it is not on a slab try under the shower unit outside. If that is not available u will have to shut off the main at the house or the meter at the street.
after shut off turn on faucet to releave the pressure prior to doing repair.

There might be an access panel on the other side of the wall the handles are on. If so, the cutoffs should be there. Some homes don't have cutoffs, and in this case you will have to cut the water off at the stree, and if you do, install cutoffs while repairing your shower faucet. If you cut the water off at the street make sure to cut off the water heater while the water is off.
