Hi, I would contact the welcome centers of each state you are planning to go through. They will send you complete informatiion for that state. Also, get their coupon books for hotels or motels. You can usually save a lot of money that way. The only negative in this, you usually cannot make reservations, it is first come first serve, so if you need every scheduled before hand, this might not work for you. Hope this helps. As far as renting a car or using your parents, I would suggest renting. Your parents may not be able to loan their car for that length of time. es

Grab an atlas and do your own thing. I have done the trip a few times. You cannot plan for accidents or construction. Make sure to get the Traveller coupon book in the rest areas. Discount hotels. Eat at truck stops. Food is decent and usually cheaper. Buy the cheapest gas you can. You will burn it off soon enough. Get a tune up before you go. Make sure you have a spare tire, and the tools to change it. This is a beautiful country. Stay off the highways when you can. Contact me if you would like more info.

I always use the AAA website, where you can make your own triptik. However, you must be a member in order to use that particular function on the website. I would strongly suggest you join, as the road service ( God forbid) comes in handy.
I wish you luck. I always wanted to start with one US Highway, and go from start to finish. My trip would be on US 17 starting here in Florida, and going north, then sometime go on US 30 east to west.
Keep in touch and let us know how it went, and look for wifi spots!
Use a rental, just watch the mileage...

renting a car would be crazy! with 3 people plus all your luggage you are going to be paying more than 1000.00 a week and that doesnt even include the mileage. Plus if you are under 25 there is another fee each day.
