I know it can be done and I know how to get the equipment but I don't know how to conect say an LED to the USB plug

USB has a +5V power in it and also a ground best bet would be to take a old usb cable and cut it and tag the wires till you get the effect you are looking for I usually just tap the +5 or +12 off of the power wires inside myself yellow +5V (good for most leds) red +12v and black ground

First of all, BE CAUTIOUS.

A homegrown device or cable may not only fry your USB connection but your entire mainboard as well.

Use only devices designed to be powered by the USB port.

i've sum equipments like the laptop cooler work with connected to USB
so theres a way but who knows how?
