i was actually wondering the exact same thing. i, too, was dissapointed by the ending. but i think waht makes the movie so Hitchcock and creepy is the fact that you don't know why the birds are attacking...there's just no logical explanation for it. i wanted to know whether or not she got together with Mitch at the end. it was a really creepy movie. classic Hitchcock

I looked it up under "The Birds", it was never explained why the birds attacked humans. But he was inspired to do this film because of a newpaper article of August 18, 1961, in Santa Cruz where birds were exhibiting strange behavior towards humans.

i thought it had something to do with the lovebirds being out of their natural habitat and man's destroying of their habitats and almost calloused disregard for it all.

i read the story last year in english, so if i'm wrong please don't hate me, but i think it has something to do with the birds getting back at us for pollution.
