It's not easy. There's a lot of luck involved, and it helps to know someone in the industry. And that's assuming you've written something worth releasing in the first place. No offence, but there's an awful lot of crap out there.
You really have to get your songs recorded to a professional standard to have any chance at all. Gone are the days when A & R men could 'hear' a hit from a crappy cassette recording. If you can sing, great, if you can't, you need to find someone who can. You may have to go through this process a fair few times before you are happy with the result.
The next stage is the REALLY tricky bit : you have to find someone who believes in your song enough to want to spend HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF POUNDS to promote it. Tall order? You bet! Try finding a manager, they will be experienced in talking to people who actually work in the industry. Try sending tracks to publishing companies (BMG Production Music, for instance).
BE PERSISTENT. If at first you don't succeed, and all that. You'll get many knockbacks before you finally convince someone that your song is worth something.
Also, as a footnote, don't "fall in love" with your songs. Try to write a new song every day. Should you ever 'make it' you'll have a wealth of material to fall back on.
Good luck!!
PS Don't believe any of that crap about myspace. By all means post your music on there, but bear in mind there's a lot of junk on there - finding a good song is like looking for a needle in the proverbial. Anyone who thinks that Lilly Allen was 'found' on myspace is a naive fool. (Her Dad's a famous actor for chrissakes!!!)

There is a new contest sponsered by VH1. You send in a tape of yourself singing an original love song and if you get picked you can get it professionally recorded. I dont really know all the deatails, but watch VH1 and see if you see anything about it. Also the contest was like made because of the up and coming movie Music and Lyrics. Good Luck :]

Step 1: Write Them Down
Step 2: Play and Sing them (or get someone else to do it)
Step 3: Record them.
Step 4: Force people to listen to them.
Step 5: Take their money.

Well, a lot of people decide to get agents to do that work for them. But if you are not that brassy I would recommend making demo tapes and sending them to record companies but they get millions of these you have to be lucky.
That is the most essential ingredient I'm afraid...luck.

Myspace.
Or wait for a reality show to form for songwriters[it's the only branch of the entertainment business that doesn't have a reality show].
