i was about 20 or 21 when i first went too... i never was sexually active either... but it is good to go because they can test you for endometriosis and other types of diseases you don't have to be sexually active to get... so it is good to go when you first get your period!

And don't let the word "scrape" scare you if you have ever saw a orthodontic brush that is how they "scrape" you... it is just a brush... also if you have never been stretched asked the gyno if he has smaller forceps to insert into you... it makes a world of difference....

Also unfortunately even if you do use protection you can still get the HPV virus from a man who has had sex with a woman with it... it transfers from skin to skin contact... so ask your gyno about the HPV vaccine!!

First, don't be afraid! I am also 20 going on 21 and my first time going I was 19 yrs old and also afraid! But that is what gyno's are for this is there job, so you don't have anything that they haven't seen already! I think being a woman that your gyno should be a woman also, because we have the same parts so they can relate better than a man gyno. They look around to make sure everything is normal, like going to the doctor, just a little more personal, if u think that something is wrong ask them to run some test on you. Yes, you do have to be sexually active to visit the gyno. All your curiousity is normal, but don't worry about it and go for it!! Good Luck!

I think most women start going when they become sexually active unless they have a medical reason. You don't have to be to get a checkup.

Generally, they will ask you to provide a urine sample. Then you will talk to the doctor. Let him know it's your first time and they will walk you through the exam. Then they will leave and you will undress. They will give you a paper or cloth gown to wear and will tell you how to put it on. Then the doctor will come in with a nurse and examine you. They will insert a speculum (uncomfortable but not terrible) and take a pap smear. Then they will remove it and insert a gloved finger into to you feel for any problems. They will probably feel your uterus and your ovaries and also do a breast exam. Then you can leave.

If you want birth control pills, or have any questions about birth control, talk to the doctor.

Don't worry, it's not bad at all. Just a little uncomfortable during some parts.

I never saw a gynocologist till I was pregnant and I was 20 yrs old. I never had a reason to see one. I wasn't sexually active till I was 19.
If you feel uncomfortable try going to a female one. I know I always choose female gynos.
They will probably ask you a bunch of questions and they will do a pap smear. Just relax and it will go smoother.

You go when your 18 OR when you become sexually active (which ever comes first). They will check your weight, height, and blood pressure. Since this is your first visit, they will ask you about your medical and sexual history. Then you might be told to pee in a cup. They will more than likely give you a breast exam and tell you to continually check your breasts in the shower for a lump. This doesn't hurt at all. Then you will get a PAP test. There is no pain involved at is literally over in a minute.

All young women should have a pelvic exam, especially if you are sexually active (contraceptives). The reason for the pelvic exam is to have a pap smear (checks for cervical cancer), so wither you are sexually active or not you need to have this done regularly (so if you do have cancer it will be caught early). I know no one who enjoys going for this exam, but it is necessary. Usually his/her nurse will be present during the exam. The Dr. will open the vigina and scrape the cervix (sometimes uncomfortable but not painful). You will be fine!

I was 15 my first time due to an issue I have.

It is not a big deal, and something you need to do. The doctor will do an internal exam with an instrument called a speculum which will hurt the first time, but its done quicly and needs to be done to check for cervical cancer, etc.

Good luck.

I believe that you are supposed to go when you are about 18, earlier if you are sexually active. They check for cervical cancer and breast cancer, so it is a good idea to go every year.
