I am a single person living in a University Residence Hall, I sometimes share food with my roomate. The local grocery store (Publix) is always having buy one get one free offers.I want to know if this makes sense financially and if I truly am saving when I buy two of one item. Yes, it is a good deal. Buy two and sell the other to someone else in the dorm before it goes bad. Yes, it is 50% off. I hope your major isn't math.

Yes... buy one get one free is 50% off but it is probably 50% off list price which is never what the store will charge for it. If the product is something that you buy on a regular basis at say $5 and it is now on sale 2 for 1 at the $5 then it's a deal... if it's 2 for 1 at $7.50 then it isn't...
Buying something simply because it's on sale is never a good idea. You could end up with a closet full of oatmeal, rice and other stuff that you're just not going to eat.
Try to get foods that you like and that will actually fill you up and that you can stretch into maybe a lunch for the next day with little effort like a stew, soup or a meatloaf. Leave all of the "Junk" food up to the individuals. If your roommate really likes chips... let her buy them, etc.
I don't know your taste or your budget so I guess that's all I can offer. I lived on Kraft Mac-n-Cheese throughout college... can't even look at the stuff now... ughhh

You are saving money but not as much as you may think. The stores jack up the price of the item to list price so that they still make a nice profit.
For example: a 2 liter bottle of coke which normally sells for $1.10 will be priced at $1.59 when the "buy one, get one free" deal is on. So without the sale you would be paying $2.20 for two bottles, with the sale you'll pay $1.59 for two.

If you were planning on buying 2, then it is the same as 50% off. Otherwise, they convince you to buy more than you want.
If you're sharing with a roommate, then it is a good deal.

It is equivalent to 50% off- but they won't let you just buy one at 50% off which is kind of silly. As you point out it's not a good deal if you buy two and then have to throw one away because it goes bad. It's great for nonperishables though.

Most of the time it is, and you can save a lot of money on sales like that especially if the product your buying is already on sale.

Not really. You'll usually see a mark-up on the first one and you have to pay sales tax on the free one.

Your for sure saving cash but if you don't use the stuff before it goe's bad thats not cool only but the thing's you can use
