anyone majoring in English?

Question

I'd like to know what kind of things you study (in detail) and what kind of questions do you get in your exams, can you write me some questions please? I know it sound stupid, I'm interested in majoring in English and would like to know some details about it, I already know what some stuf by going to colleges website and checking their English curricula, but I couldn't really find out more details. any help is appreciated.

I was an English Lit major in college. We didn't always have exams. In fact, I had many classes where all we did was read books and write papers analyzing the literature we read. For final exams I usually had to drop off a paper during the exam time. Questions varied, but as another poster said, the vast majority of the time the questions had to do more with analyzing the literature than a what-happened-who-was-there type questions. You usually come up with some sort of hypothesis, and back up what you're saying with incidents in the novel.

There were a few classes that I had to take that weren't fun, and had exams with more run-of-the mill questions. One class was History of the English Language, which actually was an interesting class, but a more "text-book" class than the others. Another was a standard grammar class that was structured like an advanced high school grammar class. Both of these classes had regular tests, quizzes, and homework assignments like you'd see in any other class.

For the most part, I had essays, essays, essays, and TONS of class discussions/debates. If you enjoy talking and writing, it's a wonderful major to consider.

There are two basic types of English classes: writing and literature. In lit, you read and analyze past works, and there are many classes that specialize in time and place of the books. In creative writing, you do a lot of writing on your own and learn processes of thought and how to write well.

I plan on majoring in chemical engineering...sorry
