the Scarlett letter, mythology by Edith Hamilton, the lord of the flies, the adventures of tom and Huck, review documents from the rationalist ( Dec. of independence, poor Richards almanac and other works by Ben. Franklin) works by transcendentalist and dark romantics ( Edgar a. Poe etc.) reading contemporary works are good too. if you do read contemporary works make sure there are some by non American authors like Jhumpa Lahiri who is the author of the interpreter of maladies. One of my favorite books is the things they carried. Also look up some Brit Lit.
