If you drop of your clothing at a laundrymat and they lose an article of clothing, do you have any rights?

The laundrymat on my street lost my $200 custom made NFL jersey and now that they can't find it, are claiming they never had it.

I do have a ticket, but it was for laundry, not dry cleaning so what was in the load of laundry is not specific.

i used to work at a dry cleaners in high school and there is usually some form of waiver they have posted in the store that says they are not responsible for damages, but for lost items they should refund the purchase price. talk to a manager and if you have a reciept for drop off show them that.

Sorry to here about your Jersey. First Dry Cleaners and Laundromat do not have insurance for lost or damages garments. That is why one reply said they paid out of pocket. Insurance is for there entire store content. You brought your laundry in you are paying normally by the pound or bulk cleaning. They do not listed what you brought in. That's why it is so cheep. All you can do is keep calling and see if it turns up or if someone returns it. If it were listed like a dry cleaning invoice you could show them the it is listed as 1 jersey. All you are showing them is you brought them laundry, who's to say what was in the load. Good luck hope it turns up.

Do you have a claim ticket? If you do, push the issue. I worked at a laundrymat during college and of course they are responsible (and have insurance to cover it if you make a claim) We usually paid out of pocket so our insurance rates would not be affected. Go to the manager - owner and don't settle until you are reimbursed.

Generally, there are signs all over Laundromats that say you are responsible for anything you wash there. You can't prove that they had it in the first place, so unless there are others who are willing to start a suit with you for their lost articles, you're SOL. Report them to the BBB. In the future, perhaps it would be better to hand wash your expensive, custom made things or have them dry cleaned.

If you have a ticket stub, you can take them to a small claim court. Or tell them you will. They should pay you something (may not be full $200) since they do have insurance. If you lost your ticket stub, you can't.

Is it the manager telling you this? That's really disgraceful if it is. You would need to make things know with the Better Business Bureau and other places around your town. Picketing their place with a sign wouldn't be out of order, either and I think it might wake them up.

not really. if you still have your claim ticket, it may say that they had it. If you can prove with out a doubt that you did drop it off, you may be able to take them to small claims court. But you have to be able to prove to the court that you did drop it off and that they did not give it back to you. tough case.

Please tell us you kept the receipt for it. If so then yes you should show it to them. If they still won’t own up to having it report it to the police.
