I changed the plugs on my 98 Cavalier last week because the engine was missing and sounding real bad. When I pulled out two of the plugs, there was black greasy gunk all over them. I put in one of the new plugs, and pulled it out because it was going in wrong, and the same stuff was all over them.

What do I do to get it cleaned out?

That is just residual oil and gunk that has surrounded the plug holes. There is probably a valve cover leak. You should always at least blow off the old plugs before you remve them. You don't want that crud falling into your engine.

You can pressure wash your engine if you are careful, or just use some rags to wipe off the bulk of the crud.

Black spark plugs are the result of your engine running rich..... the cause could be a clogged air filter. If you has black gunk around the spark plug threads, this is just oil from a loose plug. Give your car a good tune up, new oil, filter, spark plugs, wires and air filter.

Your valve covers on the engine head may need the bolts snugged up a little. Vibration loosens up the bolts sometimes and allows engine oil to drip or leak downward towards the spark plugs. You also may need to replace your valve cover gaskets if they get all dried out and keep leaking. Oil soaked plug wires will also contribute to "engine missing or misfiring".
Hope this helps.
